Landscape Lighting Project: A Contemporary Outdoor Retreat

When you are starting a landscape lighting project, it is important to focus on the specific areas you intend to light.  You can then determine the type of fixtures and style that will complement the landscape and exterior of your home.

The layout of this landscape lighting design was well thought out as the wall sconces and path lights are adequately spaced within the necessary parameters of this backyard.  A general rule of thumb when you are lighting a straight path is to space each fixture in 100 foot increments.  It is also important to light around the bends in a pathway to allow for a safe walkway for you and your guests.  Creating spaces of darkness in between the fixtures is important to create the right ambiance; you should not light your outdoor space as if it is daytime.

Atlantis and Nexus are among my favorite collections of contemporary outdoor lighting from Hinkley Lighting; both offer a very versatile yet distinctively individual style for your outdoor space and feature LED technology.  The light emitting diodes (LEDs) use 75% less energy than halogen bulbs; each LED chip has a lifespan of 40,000 hours, which means that the light bulbs will rarely have to be replaced.

Within Hinkley’s Nexus collection, each fixture features adaptable lighting applications with stem options so you can create your own one-of-a-kind approach to using these landscape lights; finding versatile lights like these gives you more freedom for creativity.  The wonderful part about Nexus is that they are so simplistic and slight in stature that you can create a layering of light in your backyard without over-crowding; just like in the image shown, the Nexus path lights and additional accent lights against the brick add a beautiful and practical touch.

The Atlantis Collection is strategically designed so that you do not see a hot spot coming from the source of the bulb, but rather a light emission protruding onto the surface.  This is ideal because when you see a hot spot, your eyes essentially go directly to the light, which can be harsh on the eyes.  Because of its tactical design, the Atlantis collection allows you to effortlessly see the quality of light and the beauty of the design.

As a decorator, it should also be noted that both the wall sconces and path lights specifically from the Atlantis collection complement each other wonderfully as the very basic silhouettes tend to do.

The design of these landscape lights offers a very contemporary and fresh perspective for outdoor lighting.  The minimalistic conception of these path lights, wall sconces and accent lights maintain the beauty and attraction of this outdoor space, rather than allowing the lights to steal the splendor of the other features of the outside area; they add a touch of grace and style while still complementing the existing elements to the space.

Create a landscape plan that allows you to spend time comfortably outside; whether it is around a pool, in a covered dining space, or terrace seating area, it is important to create a charming and comfortable atmosphere.  That was the inspiration here with the Atlantis and Nexus collections; each piece from Hinkley’s collections display a true progression in outdoor landscape lighting as they provide your outdoor space with ample lighting for safety while of course adding that touch of elegance everyone needs for their home.
