ET2 Chic Collection

This month ET2 is shining on their Chic collection as the Spotlight of the Month and it is no wonder why, as the Chic collection definitely is a distinct family of lighting.

The ET2 Chic collection features a modern twist on a classic silhouette; this collection brings together a stylish combination of “candle-like xenon lights shrouded in conical clear glass shades.” According to et2online.com, “Each of the fluid chrome curves enhances the organic simplicity of the sleek and stylish design as they flow into Polished Chrome adjustable stems.”

Although clearly a contemporary design, this striking collection sticks to some of its traditional roots as each fixture within Chic has a truly classic shape and form with modern touches. The glistening full shaped base flows out naturally giving off the impression of motion and evolves into the more modern glass shades that reflect a beautiful light when illuminated.

ET2’s Chic collection features wall sconces and chandeliers; choose from the 5 light, 9 light or exaggerated 16 light chandeliers. The additional arms add depth to the already uniquely designed collection. Because of the fusion of styles, Chic will be a significant addition to any contemporary or more traditional decorated room.

Corbett Inertia Collection

Geometric shapes are huge this year, both in repeating patterns and the general form of the light fixture – these sculptural fixtures combine function and art into unique abstract designs. Light fixtures that take on a more sculptural form are becoming more widely accepted and complement many different types of room designs. The asymmetric shapes express individuality and a break from the conventional light fixture; a good example of this is Fredrick Ramond’s Ion collection, which has a generally simple sphere shape but is composed of multiple aluminum spirals. This piece creates detail, texture and interest within a simple geometric form. The metal spirals add both a rustic and refined element to their surroundings. Ion is detailed enough to stand alone but simple enough to pair in threes over a long table or island. Many sculptural pieces follow this general theme with very detailed features, unique shapes, accents and colors.

Kichler City Lights Collection

Corbett Lighting also has a range of collection’s that display this sculptural form in lighting, like the Big Bang collection, Chimera, Spellbound and Inertia collection; although these pieces are so different they all have a refined beauty created by their lustrous finishes, attention to detail and unique shapes. Sculptural pieces can also have a more detailed composition and less decorative details – Kichler’s City Lights chandeliers are a perfect example of this. The basic rectangular lights are stacked and placed almost randomly along silver linear bars creating an abstract city and a functional piece of artwork. The Kichler Escala collection has a similar effect – the simple spheres and gentle curves make an interesting and compelling sculpture. Light sculptures are used in both sleek and modern rooms to create interest or can add a modern flare to traditional or classic spaces.

LBL Mademoiselle Pendant

The summer 2013 Dallas Market Lighting Show just wrapped up and this year was overtaken by two very different looks. On one hand you have the restoration and simple classic style and on the other there are the more modern sculptural pieces. These fun and modern pieces that have little in common with the conventional chandelier are being referred to as “Generation Z.”

Crystorama Solstice Pendant

The statement pieces are reminiscent of sculptures and jewelry; some of this movement is fueled by the switch to LED lighting. Fixtures are no longer confined to the dimensions of a standard light bulb. These fixtures can be thin and sleek, more about form than function. LBL’s Mademoiselle collection is a great example of this; the body is a sleek linear line that houses a slim LED light source. It is then draped in more than 30 feet of metal links that incorporate Swarovski Elements crystal accents.

Sonneman’s Starflex is another collection that is influenced by the evolvement of LED. This fixture is composed of select arms of thin LEDs that flex into different positions, giving the fixture multiple looks and silhouettes. Corbett and Troy Lighting have a few more artistic and sculptural pieces in this year’s collection too; the Poetry collection from Corbett features a basic shape of an orb which is the definitely a popular form in lighting this year. It is a sculpture made of hand crafted iron rods with piercing delicate and beautifully finished silver leaf planes. Solstice by Crystorama bridges the two styles – the collection is sculptural in shape but encompasses a simple classic chandelier within.

Crystorama Broche Collection

There is no denying that brass is out…..or is it?? Don’t be alarmed, that old shiny brass from the 80s and 90s is not making a comeback, this finish has evolved into a more refined, elegant and sophisticated set of finishes in the lighting world. While satin nickel has been a long-standing, ever-popular finish, the rise of oil rubbed bronze has swayed designs towards the warmer tones. Right now, the hottest finishes in lighting and décor are matte gold and champagne – satin nickel and gold combo; it has the glamour and subtlety of satin nickel with a warmer palette. Fixtures like the Crystorama Broche collection are inspired by vintage jewelry but feel very modern, sophisticated and sculptural in a golden hue. Hinkley’s contemporary Monaco collection becomes more transitional and elegant when finished in a matte gold finish while the traditional pieces like Schonbek’s Amytis collection, also being finished in a matte gold, only adds more to their elegance and sophistication.

Hinkley Monaco Collection

Matte gold is richer and far more refined than their tacky, brass relatives. The texture and hue inspires many of its forms and furnishes, it pairs nicely with gem tones as well. Emerald anyone? Emerald, the Pantone color of the year, pairs well with warm tones and adds some rich character.

Trending: Today’s fixtures are lighter in both color and design. The newest finishes are champagne, satin nickel and gold combo, satin gold and white. These finishes modernize both traditional and contemporary designs, creating a delicate elegance that fits into any décor.

Cyan Design Treviso Chandelier

Popular lighting finishes are forever changing to coordinate with the evolving styles and trends of today. Finally there is a finish that compliments every space – white light fixtures are ever so versatile that they feel modern in an edgy downtown loft and chic in a vintage country cottage.

A classic crystal chandelier instantly becomes chic when it is turned white, like in the Murray Feiss Chateau Blanc collection as well as fixtures like the Cyan Design Treviso white chandelier shown here. Other white blown glass designs add sophistication and a classic touch to any space, like the glossy white rod iron effect in Crystorama’s Solaris collection; it has a retro and modern flair.

White goes with every palette – remember, white can add a clean, bright element to brighten a dark space or soften loud colors and textures and a modern or vintage feel can be created when added to a monochromatic or simple white space. When creating your lighting design plan, don’t forget you always have white to brighten up your home.

Maxim Oak Harbor

This month Maxim Lighting is focusing on a very regal collection with a contemporary twist, the Oak Harbor collection – a collection that promises to complement any space it adorns.

The Oak Harbor collection is comprised of wall sconces, vanity lights, flush and semi-flush mounts, pendants, mini pendants and chandeliers; a compilation of beautifully designed fixtures that all can be decorated as a harmonized lighting scheme within your home.

According to maximlighting.com, Oak Harbor is “fit for bold contemporary settings and epitomizes the masculine sensibility.” It’s an uncomplicated design with a strong iron structure in a rustic burnish finish that “creates an honest unpretentious foundation.”

Each fixture within the Oak harbor collection features tapered metal ribbons forged into flowing form with beveled, soft square frost lichen glass shades that boost this already bold and handsome design. The frost shades against the dark, iron silhouette cast a warm natural light and the detailed beveled edges of the shades allow for a soft square appearance that balances the heaviness of the frame.

Add Contemporary Lighting to your home to complement your style:

Contemporary/Modern Lighting should incorporate a very clean and simple design with minimal use of accents or ornamentation. Contemporary designs represent a very subtle complexity of up to date trends; smooth lines, fresh geometric shapes with the most current and avant-garde materials are used. Since this style of lighting is so minimalist and modest it tends to be a wonderful choice of lighting for an array of settings.

This 8 Light Chandelier from Access Lighting is an excellent example of Contemporary/Modern Lighting.
